Originally called Strathkeld Bank, the estate was established in 1662 for the Bishop of Conventry. It was converted into a church-owned insane asylum in 1823 until it passed back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1868. The property was sold to the Crampton family 1881. The family used the old manor as a country home until it was destroyed by fire seven years later. Construction on the new manor began in 1889 and was complete by the next year.
